Since
the beggining of the 20TH century,
women are owning more rights all around the world, and the usual model of the
Housewife is desappearing slowly. Women are fighting for more equality, and we fortunately can see changes on
political, social and economic points. New movements are born
to protect and claim those rights, as the Feminism.
Let's focus on their place in the
professional world, and more especially in the entreprenarial world. As a definition, we can say that entrepreneurs
are individuals who design, launch
and run a new business. According to Schumpeter, they are
supposed to take
risks and to innovate. They are looking for profit, but they also have to
be honorable managers and to ensure their employee's well-being.
In this context, some entrepreneurs apply a feminist
management, which means they try to improve women's working conditions.
Sometimes they create "for
women, by women" companies. Their values
are mutual respect, ethics changes and equality for both genders.
In History, moreover in
patriarcal societies, women were not owning there own business, before the 20th
century, or in the rare cases, they were small ones, to increase their incomes. Nowadays, female entrepreneurship represent almost
1/3 of entrepreneurs in the world, according to the Global Entrepreneurship
Monitor report. In the 30 last years, the number of self-employed women
increased approximatly of thirty-three percent. Many of them work
from home and they are generally performing in wholesale,
retail trade, and manufacturing.
In the
majority of OECD countries, women are more likely to work in services industry
than men. In addition, they start their own business as a second or third
profession, this is the reason why the average age of female entrepreneurs is
between 48 and 58.
We can notice that
there's a disparity of Woman's place in Business worldwide: in opposition to
our beliefs, developping countries are more likely to run a business than in
the biggest countries. The reason of this phenomenon is the need to increase
their incomes. For example, the highest
number of females involved in entrepreneurial activities is Sub-Saharan Africa,
with 27% of the female population, followed by the Latin America/Caribbean area
with 15%. The lowest numbers are in Asia, with the Pakistan, where the female
entrepreneurs account for 1%.
In
Europe, women represent 34,4% of the EU self-employed. Because female potential has been under-exploited
for decades and it would be a great source
of economic growth, The European Commission decided to promote and
support female entrepreneurship with a plan for 2020 and an award for woman
innovators.
The biggest challenges for women entrepreneurs are
to access to finance and to information. They need training, advices and a
competent network. More other, they have to deal with both business and family
concerns.
Some crafty people
understood the potencial of the rising popularity of entrepreneurship for
women, and they create an all new business around it. It became a magazine
topic, and many training programs are sold. Fairs are organized, such as
the Women entrepreneurship week NextGen
in Zurich, in June 2017.
To conclude, we can hope an improvement of
Woman's condition in the entreprenarial world for the next decades.
